Special Masters Programs Medicine

If you are interested in pursuing an advanced degree in one of the basic science departments, we offer the following master’s degree programs: Master of Science in Biomedical Sciences Master of Science in Medical Microbiology and Immunology Master of Science in Medical Sciences. The academic world of healthcare and medical specialties is vast and the way to potentially pave the way towards a niche career involves pursuing one of many Medicine and Health Masters Programs.It is true that an undergrad degree may be enough for some entry-level roles, but if you aspire to practice medicine, dentistry, osteopathy or advanced nursing, or hold an administrative role in.

The Duke University School of Medicine offers an innovative 11-month professional master’s degree, the Master of Biomedical Sciences (MBS). The goal of this program is to enhance the scientific and professional preparation of students aspiring to a career in the health professions or in a related field requiring graduate level biomedical sciences. Students will bolster their preparation for further study or entry into the biomedical workforce by completing a rigorous combination of multidisciplinary graduate level coursework, immersive patient-centered service learning, individualized electives, advising, and professional development.

The Duke MBS2021 class began July 7, 2021 with a virtual orientation. At present, the majority of classes are held virtually, with the exception of Human Structure. We modified Human Structure to allow a shorter duration dissection experience with decreased room density, greater distancing and additional personal protective equipment. On anatomy lab days, students complete online screening through Student Health. If students screen negative they are given an electronic “pass” that allows them to enter the physical screening station of hand sanitizer, temperature check, verbal screening, mask exchange and a second hand sanitizer station. They can entrance to the lab after showing the electronic pass. Students have committed to professional expectations which include campus presence only during designated class sessions. Students are aware of expectation to use frequent handwashing, social distancing of at least 6 feet, masking, and to adhere to local and state coronovirus restrictions. For questions please contact MBS at dukembs@duke.edu.

Distinguishing features of Duke’s MBS program:

  • Located within the Duke University School of Medicine in the heart of a major academic medical center that includes the Duke University Hospital, the Duke Medicine Pavilion, Duke Clinics, Duke Cancer Center, and the Duke Clinical Research Institute;
  • Graduate level coursework in the human biological sciences designed specifically for and dedicated to MBS students;
  • Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) training, certification, and experience. MBS students will be members of an interprofessional health care team, not shadows or observers;
  • Gross anatomy course with cadaveric dissection that is integrated with the EMT curriculum and revisited during other core courses;
  • Team-based learning and small group seminars focusing on communication, team work, professional formation, ethics;
  • Instruction, advising, and mentoring by faculty leaders in Duke’s highly rated medical student, physician assistant, and doctor of physical therapy programs in addition to Duke University’s Office of Health Professions Advising;
  • Electives to meet individual needs and interests;
  • Scholarship assistance (merit and need-based);
  • Vibrant Duke University and Durham community.

We hope to match our students with the best opportunities for success in the health professions and/or related biomedical fields. MBS students will learn the language of human medicine (e.g. anatomy and biological systems) as well as the context of clinical care (e.g. patients and clinicians’ perspectives, health delivery systems).

  • An interdisciplinary program designed to prepare students for professional schools.

    This one-year program has been developed to provide a novel interdisciplinary and concentrated program of study. The rigorous curriculum integrates several disciplines and topics covered in the first and second years of medical school and is designed to allow students to demonstrate their full academic ability and suitability for future careers in healthcare in either academic or clinical environments. The interdisciplinary nature of the program promotes a broad intellectual focus that is required of current and future health-care professionals.

  • An online program designed to prepare students for professional schools.

    This program concentration was designed for students to complete their medical sciences degree online. It is suited for students who want to expand their knowledge in the basic medical sciences prior to applying to professional schools. While the curriculum mirrors the pre-professional program, all coursework will be completed 100% online and will take an additional semester to complete due to the course schedule. The ideal student for this program will be self-directed during the facilitation of the coursework via our online platform known as CANVAS.

  • A program designed for those with a concentrated interest in Anatomy to prepare for professional schools or teaching.

    This one-year program concentration was designed to develop expertise and experience in human gross anatomy, neuroanatomy, embryology, histology, pathology and laboratory medicine. This curriculum promotes the broad intellectual focus required for future professional students in the anatomical sciences or other health-care related professions. Graduates of these programs are anticipated to continue their professional development at medical and dental schools, as well as a variety of other healthcare professional programs. This program is also suited for those with an interest in teaching in the field of anatomy.

  • A program designed to enlarge the pool of qualifiedunder-represented minorities and individuals from disadvantaged backgrounds whoare interested in pursuing medicine as a career.

    The IMS concentration is offered out of the Office of Student Diversity and Enrichment within the Morsani College of Medicine. The Interdisciplinary concentration provides qualified students with advanced training in the sciences basic to the practice of medicine. Students will take science and anatomy courses with first year medical students This program starts in mid-June on an alternative calendar with the medical school. Students from a group under-represented in medicine and/or disadvantaged backgrounds are strongly encouraged to apply.
