Congratulations on a great first semester eighties! Upon return from winter break, look forward to the following:
1. Editing LA/SS Essays (please do not spend hours revising over the break! You will have time the week back from school!)

HANUKKAH GENRE STORY:
'Grandpa, what is the actual story of Hanukkah?'
'Well, son, according to the grade 8 students at the CJA, it has to do with curiously-named Maccabees, dinosaurs, and a bunch of stuffy, British family members..'
'Wow, grandpa! Those kids must be pretty creative, and maybe a little crazy! Can we go watch it?'
For your entertainment and education, the grade 8 students will be creating and performing the story of Hanukkah in a particular genre style (comedy and British humor). Students can use costume, prop and set pieces, musical accompaniments, and anything else appropriate for their skit.
Group participation and collaboration, creativity, and an accurate storyline are major components of a successful performance!

PERSUASIVE ESSAY (LA/SS):
Summary: Students will write a 5 paragraph persuasive essay, focusing on effective leadership qualities.
Content (SS); Vocabulary, Sentence Structure, Information organization/flow, conventions (LA)

'ly' Adverbs for Academic Writing
SUNFLOWER 5 W'S:
Who: Main/minor characters, character descriptions and quality traits, purpose/importance in storyline/plot.
What: A story summary (What was the meaning of the title, Sunflower)
Where: AKA Setting: Places, both general and specific, of events
When: Years, timelines, day/night times, seasons
Why: Why did Simon act/make the decision he did? Why do you think the author chose to write this novel? What was her message?
Ask Yourself: Will someone who has not read Sunflower be able to grasp an understanding of the novel based on the information I have provided..?
NIGHT QUOTES:
Summary: You will select one quote from each chapter (9 total) and choose 5 to explain how our themes- Courage and/or Morality- relate to those quotes.
General Writing Tips:* Avoid a general summary of quote scene (you know the scene, I know the scene, lets move on)
* Make sure to actually mention the theme! You would think this to obvious, but not always.
'This quote represents courage because..'
* If you mention actual parts of the quote, you will get teacher impressed points. This shows me you are analyzing the words/meanings/ideas/themes in the quote, not just the overall message.
* 6 Openers and 6 dress-ups throughout entire assignment.
